United Nations Day: a European statement confirms that the Russian aggression against Ukraine undermines the main pillars for which the international organization was established

Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
A statement issued in Brussels by the office of Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy coordinator, said that nearly eight decades ago, the United Nations was created to save humanity from the scourge of war and destruction. Since then, the nations and peoples of the world have built the system of rules and global cooperation that we enjoy today.

Members of the United Nations family wrote and agreed to these rules and customs together, with the Charter of the United Nations and international law as the cornerstones.

Everyone in the international community has agreed to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations - large or small - and to protect the rights of their people.

Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine undermines these basic pillars. Its consequences are global - increasing food and energy insecurity and a financial crisis that will affect every corner of the world, especially the countries and groups of the most vulnerable people.

The resounding support for UN General Assembly resolutions calling on Russia to immediately stop its aggression and reject its attempt to illegally annex parts of Ukraine, testifies that the vast majority of countries in the world want to respect the UN Charter.

The world wants, needs and deserves peace. This is the highest priority of the European Union.

Multilateralism and international cooperation mean working together to meet the global challenges of today and tomorrow.

The years of the pandemic have not only slowed the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, but also reversed progress in many areas. It is critical that we get the world back on the right track.

On this United Nations Day, we thank and congratulate the United Nations and its staff for their vital work around the world, from Syria to Afghanistan, from the Sahel to Yemen, and from Myanmar to Colombia.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres' report "Our Common Agenda" is an opportunity to advance global governance reforms to make the UN-focused multilateral system fit for tomorrow's world.

A United Nations that better performs our common global commitments and reflects the reasons for its founding: to ensure peace, prevent war, and guarantee the rights of all.
The Charter of the United Nations is one of the tools of the United Nations, as it was signed on June 26, 1945 AD. It defines the duties and obligations of member states and establishes the main organs and procedures of the United Nations. The Charter is an international alliance that codifies the basic umbrellas of international relations from the sovereign equality of states to preventing the use of force by any means that are inconsistent with the objectives of the United Nations. The Charter is the foundational document of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, which are themselves tools to increase the values embodied in the Charter of the United Nations. Universities realize that the values of the Charter of the United Nations can use educational tools to realize the principles embodied in the document and motivate their students to promote them as well.
