Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union rejects Turkey's statements regarding the admission of the separatist Turkish Cypriot entity, the so-called, unrecognized, "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", as an observer in the Organization of Turkish States. This decision, pending ratification by the members of the organization, is unfortunate and contradicts the fact that many members of the organization have expressed strong support for the principle of territorial integrity and the Charter of the United Nations.
Through a spokesperson for the European Foreign Policy Coordinator in Brussels, the EU has repeatedly made it clear, including at the highest political levels, that the EU only recognizes the Republic of Cyprus as a subject of international law, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Any action to facilitate or assist in any way the international recognition of the separatist Turkish Cypriot entity seriously harms efforts to create an environment conducive to the resumption of settlement talks under the auspices of the United Nations.
The EU is fully committed to reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation with political equality, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in line with EU legislation and the principles on which the EU was founded. There is no alternative to it.
