Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
On Friday, November 25, European interior ministers will hold an emergency meeting on persistent migration problems. This was announced by the Czech Presidency of the European Union
The current rotating Czech presidency of the federation said in a tweet that "the current situation on all migratory routes" would be discussed, but the reason for the urgent meeting was the recent diplomatic spat between France and Italy over the reception of migrants rescued by the Ocean Viking.
According to what was reported by the Belgian news agency in Brussels, Rome refused to allow a non-governmental organization ship with 230 migrants on board, after which France eventually opened a port. Since then, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian President Sergio Mattarella have worked to sort it out to some extent, but the incident once again demonstrated the long-standing division among member states over approaches to the migration issue and solidarity in receiving asylum seekers.
With the so-called migration agreement, the European Commission made a new attempt in 2020 to bridge the differences between front-line countries and countries of destination and countries that do not want to participate in the resettlement of asylum seekers, but the countries failed to agree on these plans.
