Two weeks ago, data from the European Statistical Agency Eurostat revealed that carbon dioxide emissions in the European Union during 2022 as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels - oil and its derivatives, natural gas, coal and peat - for energy use amounted to approximately 2.4 gigatonnes, indicating a decline of 2.8 percent compared to the previous year. .

Eurostat said that in 2022 carbon dioxide emissions from energy use decreased in 17 European Union countries, with the largest decrease recorded in the Netherlands 12.8 percent, followed by Luxembourg 12 percent, then Belgium 9.7 percent and Hungary 8.6 percent.

On the contrary, Bulgaria recorded the largest increase in carbon dioxide emissions, with an increase of 12 percent, followed by Portugal with 9.9 percent and Malta with 4.1 percent.
In late April, following in the footsteps of the European Parliament, the EU member states recently approved five legislative texts aimed at enabling the EU to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.
