Brussels: Washington: Europe and the Arabs
Belgium celebrated its National Day on Friday, and on this occasion an American statement was issued indicating Washington's anticipation of Belgium's presidency of the European Union at the beginning of next year, which is the rotating presidency that Spain currently holds and lasts for a period of six months.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that his country is looking forward to Belgium's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the period from January to June 2024. According to what was reported by the Middle East News Agency today, Saturday.
This came in a statement on the US State Department's website, on the occasion of Belgium's National Day.
The statement said that the deep friendship with Belgium is based on common values and strong commitment to democracy, noting that the two countries stood side by side in a common sacrifice during two world wars.
The statement added that as the two countries are founding members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the two countries have established the cornerstone of peace, prosperity and stability, which the transatlantic community has enjoyed for more than 70 years.
The statement indicated that the close cooperation in responding to the comprehensive Russian war on Ukraine led to the deepening of bilateral relations.
The statement added that strong trade and investment relations between the two countries have continued to flourish on both sides of the Atlantic, including through the partnership between the United States and the European Union.
"We recognize Belgium's support for resilient pharmaceutical supply chains, expertise in the clean energy transition and semiconductors, and growing commitment to defense investments and counter-terrorism efforts," the statement said. "Our shared commitment to human rights, equity, diversity and the environment makes us natural partners."
The statement concluded by saying, "We are a proud partner of Belgium on a wide range of issues that concern our people, and we have a shared commitment to creating opportunities for our common security and prosperity. I look forward to continuing our cooperation in the coming year to create a more secure and prosperous future for our citizens. Best wishes to the people of Belgium on your National Day."
