Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union has expressed its deep concern about the ongoing conflict, alleged abuses and violations of human rights, and reports of dozens of civilian casualties in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, according to a statement issued in Brussels by the office of European Union Foreign Policy Coordinator Josep Borrell.
According to the European statement, "widespread arrests have been reported, especially since the declaration of the state of emergency. The European Union joins the African Union, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the Ethiopian National Dialogue Committee in calling for the protection of civilians, the cessation of hostilities and dialogue between the parties."
The European Union is ready to support any process that leads to dialogue, reconciliation and peace through a political settlement. We urge all Ethiopians to take the path of dialogue, especially within the framework of the ongoing national dialogue process, which provides a concrete, long-term framework for a peaceful future for the country.
