Discussions of the interior ministers of the European Union member states began this morning in Brussels, headed by Fernandez Gomez, Minister of the Interior of Spain, whose country holds the current rotating presidency of the unified bloc. According to what the European Union institutions announced, the agenda of the discussions includes several files:
Asylum and migration
The Council will be informed of the status of ongoing legislative discussions to reform EU asylum legislation. Ministers will also exchange views on the external dimension of migration – including cooperation with external partners to manage migration pressures.
Cooperation with Latin America
Another item on the agenda is cooperation with Latin America in aspects of internal security, after a working lunch on this topic. The aim of the luncheon - which will bring together EU ministers and 14 ministers participating in the Latin American Committee for Internal Security (CLASI) - is to promote and strengthen practical cooperation between the EU and Latin America in the fight against drug trafficking and the fight against drug trafficking. Transnational organized crime.
Consequences of Russian aggression against Ukraine
Also on the agenda are the consequences that Russian aggression against Ukraine may have on the internal security of the European Union.
Ministers will also discuss extending temporary protection for people who fled Ukraine after the start of the war. This mechanism – activated on 4 March 2022 – allows displaced people from Ukraine to enjoy harmonized rights relating, for example, to accommodation and medical assistance across the European Union. It was initially granted for one year and has already been extended once until 4 March 2024. The Commission's proposal aims to extend it for another year until 4 March 2025.
