Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
On the second and final day of the European Union Leaders Summit, which began yesterday, Thursday in Brussels, the leaders of the member states will evaluate the latest developments in the Middle East region, including the immediate security and humanitarian situation in Gaza. A European statement issued in Brussels said that, in light of the brutal and indiscriminate attack launched by Hamas against Israel and the tragic scenes unfolding in the Gaza Strip, the European Union:
Condemns Hamas in the strongest possible terms
Recognizes Israel's right to defend itself in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law
It is deeply concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza
At their last meeting in October, EU leaders called for continued rapid, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access and aid to those in need. They also stressed the need to cooperate with partners in the region to avoid regional escalation.
Based on their previous discussions, the leaders will evaluate how to work towards achieving security and stability in the region and the prospects for peace based on a two-state solution.
In light of recent disturbing events, EU leaders will address all forms of hatred, anti-Semitism, intolerance, racism and xenophobia, including anti-Muslim hatred.
The European Council will also discuss how to strengthen security and defense in the European Union, in the context of global instability, strategic competition and security threats.
Drawing on the Versailles Declaration, in which EU leaders set out to strengthen EU security and defense capabilities, and previous European Council conclusions and the Strategic Compass, leaders will assess progress and provide further guidance. In this regard, the leaders are expected to discuss how to increase the EU's defense preparedness and work to create an internal defense market.
