Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union welcomed the formation of the new transitional government in Syria. It expressed its readiness to cooperate with the new government to help address the enormous challenges ahead. The aspirations of all Syrians must be met, as recently reaffirmed at the 9th Brussels Conference on Syria. The European Union will stand by the Syrian people, ensuring that the new government's commitments to a peaceful and inclusive transition are respected, according to a statement distributed in Brussels by the office of European Foreign and Security Policy Representative Kaya Kallas and several members of the European Commission. The statement added, "The European Union affirms its unwavering support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned, peaceful transition process that is inclusive of all components of Syrian society, where comprehensive transitional justice ensures accountability for all crimes and contributes meaningfully to national reconciliation. In this context, the process launched by the National Dialogue Conference, held on 25 February, will play a crucial role.
It is also essential that all external actors fully respect Syria's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The European Union condemns any attempts to undermine its stability and the prospects for a peaceful and inclusive political transition."
