A Dutch MP of Moroccan origin, running for mayor, is subjected to a smear campaign... Leaking the news is a blatant violation of confidentiality required in such situations.

The Hague – Noureddine Amrani
Before, during, and after the announcement of the parliamentary election results, which saw the Democrats 66 party emerge victorious, Asma Lahlah, a Dutch parliamentarian of Moroccan origin and a member of the Labour Party and the Green Left, was subjected to a malicious campaign by pseudo-journalists and politicians in The Hague following the leak of news regarding her candidacy for mayor of Tilburg and Delft.

This leak constitutes a blatant violation of the parliamentarian's right as a citizen to run for such an administrative position in a city that serves its citizens. This right is guaranteed by the Dutch constitution, and no one has the right to interfere with the freedom to run for any public office that guarantees equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens of the city. The mayor of Arnhem, Ahmed Marcouch, of Moroccan origin, published a post expressing his condemnation and dismay at the campaign targeting Asma Lahlah, demanding that those behind the leak be revealed. He questioned how accusations could be leveled so quickly against an ambitious woman while a strange silence prevailed regarding those who were truly violating standards. Marcouch added that Lahlah submitted her candidacy for mayor in complete secrecy, which is her right and indeed a fundamental requirement, especially since it concerns the future management of a city with a constitutional status. He stated that the actions of those who leaked the information constitute a blatant violation of the confidentiality that should govern such nominations. The leak represents a breach of trust, an attack on the rule of law, and a confirmation of selectivity—a disgrace to those responsible. Lahlah's candidacy is a right she exercised with complete integrity, as she is an ambitious and respected figure in a society where the seeds of racism are beginning to sprout from all sides. The responsible authorities must conduct an investigation to uncover these infiltrators and those who leaked personal information that undermines the right to run for office.
