Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Brundsen summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest Tel Aviv's decision to revoke the diplomatic status of Dutch staff at the diplomatic mission in Ramallah, describing the move as "unnecessary."
The Israeli decision came in response to the Dutch ban on goods from illegal settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, which took effect last week.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated, "Israel will not ignore any steps that cause it harm." The Dutch diplomats are required to leave the mission within seven days, though the number of affected staff has not yet been specified. The Israeli ambassador is expected to meet with Brundsen on Tuesday or Wednesday to discuss the details and repercussions of the decision.
In a related development, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during a visit to Brundsen, reiterated his country's opposition to imposing sanctions on settlements, arguing that such measures would also harm the Palestinians.
The Netherlands continues its efforts to persuade the European Union to adopt a boycott of settlement goods, though it has not yet garnered sufficient support.
