A European statement issued in Brussels on Saturday affirmed that the European Union stands with the Syrians, the Lebanese and the Palestinians and will remain committed to helping them overcome the crises they face and combat the trafficking of migrants. The last of a boat off the Syrian coast, which killed 77 people, according to the latest death toll, mostly Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians.

"This new tragedy at sea is the worst recent boat sinking of migrants leaving the region," the European spokeswoman said through the statement.
