In the final shortlist, the MEPs chose only three - WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, the Ukrainian people and their representatives, and the Colombian Truth Commission - for the 2022 Sakharov Prize.
According to a statement issued by the highest legislative institution in the European Union and distributed in Brussels, members of the European Parliament in the Foreign Affairs and Development Committees held a joint vote to select the finalists for the 2022 European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. They chose: Julian Assange, imprisoned WikiLeaks publisher; The brave Ukrainian people represented by their President, their elected leaders and civil society; Truth Commission of Colombia.
The European Parliament leaders (presidents and leaders of political groups) will choose the winner on Wednesday 19 October. He will receive the same award at a ceremony to be held at a session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on December 14.
The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament. It was established in 1988 to honor individuals and organizations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. It was named in honor of the Soviet physicist and political opponent Andrei Sakharov, and the prize is 50,000 euros.
Last year, Parliament awarded the prize to Russian opposition politician and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny.
