The US Embassy in Khartoum announced that Ambassador John Godfrey arrived in Sudan to be his country's first ambassador there in 25 years. The embassy said on Facebook that Godfrey will work "as a prominent representative of the US government to strengthen relations between the American and Sudanese peoples and support their aspirations for freedom, peace, justice and democratic transition." The embassy added that Godfrey "looks forward to advancing priorities related to peace and security, economic development and food security." It is noteworthy that the United States has reduced its diplomatic representation in Sudan since 1997, when it imposed economic sanctions, accusing it of "supporting terrorism." In 2019, after the army overthrew the regime of ousted President Omar al-Bashir, following massive demonstrations, Washington announced that it would raise its diplomatic representation with Khartoum. The US State Department published a statement on December 4 of that year, in which it welcomed the visit of then Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok on his first visit to Washington. And she announced that the United States and Sudan had decided to "begin the process of exchanging ambassadors after a gap of 23 years." The ministry described that decision at the time as an "important step forward in strengthening bilateral relations."
