Ukraine's Foreign Minister: I spoke to the Prime Minister of Israel about the request for defense systems

(Reuters) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Thursday he had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and discussed in detail Kyiv's request for air and missile defense systems and technology.

"I informed him of the unspeakable suffering, loss of life and destruction caused by Russian missiles and Iranian-made drones," he wrote on Twitter.

Despite its condemnation of the Russian invasion, Israel said it would not supply arms to Ukraine. Its assistance to Kiev was limited to humanitarian relief, indicating its desire to continue cooperation with Moscow on neighboring war-torn Syria, and to ensure the well-being of Russia's Jews.

Israel recently offered to help the Ukrainians develop air strike warning devices for civilians.

Lapid's office said the Israeli prime minister assured Kuleba of his country's support for Ukraine, and expressed his "deep concern" about military ties between Iran and Russia.

Russia has launched dozens of kamikaze drones into Ukraine to strike energy infrastructure. Ukraine says it is an Iranian-made Shahed-136 drone.

Tehran denies supplying Moscow with drones, and the Kremlin denied on Tuesday that Russian forces had used Iranian drones to attack Ukraine. Washington says Iran's denials are false.
