The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN Security Council will discuss, during a meeting in India, on Friday, the growing threat posed by new and emerging technologies to the world, including the use of drones by terrorist groups, Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported.
The meeting comes in parallel with international warnings of the spread of drones in the hands of terrorist organizations on the African continent, which has become a new center of gravity for these terrorist groups, where civil conflicts and fragile governments thrive.
According to the statements of the Indian envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Roshira Kamboj, on the international organization's website, "attacks using unmanned aircraft systems are currently being reported in many conflict areas, which adds complexity to their legitimate use."
Drones are characterized by their relatively cheap prices compared to conventional aircraft, in addition to the ease of access to the technology used in their manufacture, which raises questions about the possibility of this dangerous weapon reaching extremist groups.
In mid-October, a report published by the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, South Africa (ISS), pointed to the mounting evidence of the use of drones by terrorists and criminal groups in Africa.
The report, which came under the title "Armed Drones - The Latest Technical Threat Reaching Africa", pointed out that the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war highlighted the role of "drones" on the battlefields, and there is an arms race now underway in the field of their production and acquisition, adding that it could be possible to It also procures, adapts and uses drones to disrupt critical infrastructure such as airports, power plants, and communications networks.
