European rules for open digital markets come into force today

Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
Today, Tuesday, early November, the European Digital Markets Act (DMA) comes into effect. The new regulation will put an end to unfair practices by companies that play the role of "guardian" in the online platform economy. The law was proposed by the Commission in December 2020 and approved by the European Parliament and the Council in record time, in March 2022.
The new DMA defines when a digital platform acts as a gatekeeper.
These are digital platforms that provide an important bridge between business users and consumers, whose location can give them the ability to act as a private decision maker and act as an obstacle in the digital economy.
To solve these problems, the DMA creates a list of obligations that gatekeepers must respect, including prohibiting certain behaviors.
With its entry into force, the DMA will enter the critical implementation phase and begin applying within six months, beginning on May 2, 2023. Then, within two months and no later than July 3, 2023, prospective custodians will be required to do so. Notify the Authority's primary platform services, if they meet the limits set by the DMA
