Washington Post: Midterm results are a political boost for Biden

The results of the US midterm elections are giving President Joe Biden a much-needed political boost, as his party's better-than-expected performance enabled him to avoid a devastating setback and quelled Democrats' calls for him to end his presidency after one term.

Biden told a news conference Wednesday evening at the White House that the Democrats had a strong night, losing fewer seats in the House of Representatives than in the midterm elections of any Democratic president in the last 40 years.

The newspaper pointed out that Biden's press conference after the elections, was the same procedure that his predecessors used to publicly heal their wounds after the midterm elections, in which the president's seat usually loses dozens of congressional seats.

President George W. Bush conceded a massive loss from Democrats in 2006, President Barack Obama bemoaned the Republican bombing in 2010, while Trump criticized members of his party after losing 41 seats in 2018.

Instead, Biden spoke of his extreme optimism, transforming from a man who was considered politically endangered to defying at least the worst of expectations. Biden said he plans to spend most of the remainder of his first term implementing policies that Democrats have already pursued. Perhaps this was a tacit acknowledgment of the new political reality of a divided government.

But most analysts say Democrats were supported by voter concerns about abortion rights and Trump's return, not by Biden himself. While he avoided the worst outcomes, Biden's prospects would not change dramatically if Republicans took control of the House, even by a simple majority.

This shift in power could derail most of Biden's legislative agenda, exposing his administration to an array of investigations and subpoenas, while adding brinkmanship and turmoil to bills that must pass in order to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling.
