Badr Abdel-Aty, Egyptian Ambassador to the European Union, as a keynote speaker at a symposium entitled "COP27 Sharm El-Sheikh Conference, What Next, for Global Climate Policy" organized by the University of Europe in Bruges, College of Europe, in coordination with the EPICO Foundation working in energy research, climate policies and innovation, with the participation of a group Among the specialists in the field of climate change from the European Commission and students and professors of the University of Europe.
The Egyptian ambassador referred to Egypt's success in chairing and hosting the largest conference for multilateral action, with the participation of about 120 heads of state and government during the six round tables on November 7 and 8, and about 45,000 participants over the course of the conference. The conference produced tangible results and outputs on various climate issues, including financing, adaptation and mitigation, losses and damages, and follow-up on the implementation of these goals.
Abdel-Aty reviewed the most important results of the outputs of Sharm El-Sheikh, especially the consensus of all participating countries to adopt the "Sharm El-Sheikh plan to implement climate commitments", in addition to including the item dealing with losses and damages within the agenda of climate conferences, in a precedent that is the first of its kind, in addition to establishing a fund to finance Losses and damages, in addition to developing a work program on the issue of mitigation. In addition, the agreement on an ambitious agenda for adaptation to climate change in order to adopt the global goal on adaptation during the next conference, as well as the call launched by the Sharm el-Sheikh conference to international financing institutions in order to enhance the mobilization of global climate finance.
The participants highlighted Egypt's successful hosting and presidency of the COP27 Climate Conference, the results of the conference despite the geopolitical challenges that accompanied its convening, and the need for close follow-up to the implementation of the outputs of Sharm El-Sheikh, which included all tracks of climate action, were emphasized. The participants also appreciated the initiatives launched on the sidelines of the Sharm Conference. Sheikh, which dealt with a variety of important topics and issues, including food security, just transition, and the future of energy, especially green hydrogen.
On the other hand, the Egyptian ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, during his stay in Bruges, which includes one of the largest European ports dedicated to importing natural gas and green hydrogen, met with the governor of West Flanders and the mayor of Bruges, where they discussed the economic and trade relations between Egypt and Belgium, especially In the field of energy and the development of Egyptian ports in light of the existing cooperation with Belgian ports, led by the Belgian ports of Antwerp and Ze Bruges.
The two Belgian officials affirmed the Belgian side's aspiration to enhance cooperation with Egypt in the field of circulation and transfer of renewable and clean energy, especially green hydrogen, in light of the great potential that Egypt has in terms of natural resources and infrastructure that qualify it to be a center for trading and exporting energy to Europe.
In this context, the Egyptian ambassador highlighted the Egyptian capabilities in the field of energy in its various traditional, renewable and clean sources, especially the great potential that Egypt possesses for cooperation in the field of natural gas, especially liquefied gas (LNG), which qualifies Egypt as a regional center for the production, distribution and circulation of energy in the region. As well as prospects for future cooperation between the two sides in the fields of clean, new and renewable energy; And on top of it is green hydrogen.
