Belgian police: 60 people were arrested at a train station south of Brussels to preserve the safety of passengers and residents of the surrounding area

Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The Belgian police arrested about 60 people in the Brussels-South railway station area on Saturday during a large-scale operation. According to the Belgian news agency
More than 100 police officers took part in the security operation that targeted the Al Mahatta area on Saturday after complaints about safety issues and inconvenience from residents and commuters. The police operation began at 10:00 on Saturday morning and continued into the evening. According to the same sources, most of the people who were arrested by the police were arrested because they were not registered in Belgium. The Immigration Department was also present at the station and was following up on cases. Which requires deportation outside the country and the rest will remain in custody
The police action is part of a series of new measures announced last Friday to improve living conditions and safety at the station. It was announced by Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo and Interior Minister Annelise Verlinden.
"After a cry for help from the SNCB (Belgium's national railway company.) and the Brussels-Capital Region that they could no longer handle the situation, we wanted to take clear action in the short term," said Minister Verlinden. “In the long term, a sustainable approach is needed to this problem. Tackling poverty, housing, drug addiction and deteriorating infrastructure: these are essential parts of the solution.”
