147 deaths were recorded as a result of aviation accidents in the European Union last year, including commercial, airships, sails and small helicopters.

In 2022, 147 people died in aviation accidents on EU territory involving EU-registered aircraft, an increase of 26 people from 2021.
This information comes from air transport safety data published by the European Statistical Office: Eurostat" on Thursday
As in previous years, most aviation fatalities in 2022 (83% or 112 fatalities) involved aircraft with a maximum take-off mass (MTOM) of less than 2,250 kg in the 'General Aviation' category.
This subcategory includes small airplanes, airships, semi-auto gliders, small planes, and small helicopters, as well as hot air balloons.
Only one person has died in general aviation accidents involving EU registered aircraft with an MTOM over 2,250 kg in weight.
In 2022, commercial air transport recorded the second highest number of deaths: 17 (12% of the total), followed by air work with 7 deaths (5%).
In the period 2012-2022, no major accidents were recorded in commercial air transport in the European Union involving aircraft registered in the European Union. The exception was 2015, when 150 people were killed in a German plane crash in the French Alps.
