New York: Europe and the Arabs
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is participating in the G20 summit, which begins today in the Indian capital, New Delhi. The United Nations daily news bulletin, a copy of which we received this morning, said that Guterres carries with him a “simple but urgent appeal” to the leaders participating in the summit, which is to work together for a greater solution. Challenges facing humanity.
In a press conference held on the eve of the summit on September 9-10, the UN Secretary-General said that global leadership is particularly needed in two priority areas: climate action and sustainable development.
He added, "We have no time to waste. The challenges extend as far as the eye can see."
Guterres warned that the world is going through a difficult transitional moment, as it faces worsening inequality, levels of poverty and hunger, while there is a clear lack of global solidarity, noting that “we cannot continue like this. We must come together and work together for the common good.”
Climate justice
The Secretary-General cautioned that G20 member states are the world's leading producers of greenhouse gases, responsible for 80% of total global emissions, and therefore need to show greater leadership in climate action.
Guterres added that leadership "means keeping the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius alive, rebuilding confidence based on climate justice, and promoting a just and equitable transition to a green economy."
He stressed that leadership also means that the richest countries fulfill their long-term financing commitments to help developing countries achieve their goals to reduce emissions, citing the example of the Green Climate Fund.
Concrete actions
The Secretary-General called on the leaders of the twenty countries to take concrete measures to ensure that the world achieves the sustainable development goals on schedule by 2030.
These measures include financing the sustainable development goals stimulus plan with no less than $500 billion annually, in addition to establishing an effective mechanism to reduce the debt burden on poor countries.
Other measures include changing the business model of multilateral development banks in order to make greater use of private finance, as well as shifting subsidies away from fossil fuels to more productive uses.
Guterres stressed that these measures taken together "would stimulate progress on the sustainable development goals and help developing economies invest in key transitions in energy, food systems, digitalization, education, health, decent jobs, and social protection."
He added that significant progress towards achieving development goals remains within reach as long as there is good will on the part of all countries, regions and groups.
It is noteworthy that the main theme of the G20 summit in India this year is “One Land, One Family, One Future.”
At the conclusion of his speech to reporters, the Secretary-General stressed that "we must work together as one family to save our one land and secure our future."
