In 2022, Belgian households spent 15.8% of their budget on food, drinks and tobacco. To some extent, this is a decline to normal after a peak of 18.1% in 2020. The biggest bite of the budget, 30.7% of the total, remains housing (rent, water, energy, maintenance and other costs). ).
This is clearly demonstrated by new figures released by the Belgian statistical agency Statbel, based on the Household Budget Survey (HBO) of nearly 5,000 Belgian households.
This biennial survey is used, among other things, as an input for updating the basket of indicators and for estimating household consumption expenditure in the national accounts.
In 2022, Belgian households spent an average of €40,223. Overall, in the Flemish Region it amounted to €41,180, the Walloon Region €38,707, and the Brussels Region €39,638. In 2018, this amount amounted to, respectively, €35,764 in Belgium and €36,895. in Flanders, 34,589 euros in Wallonia, and 33,356 euros in the Brussels-Capital Region.
