UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the need to end the era of fossil fuels (such as oil and coal) and act now to protect people on the frontline of the climate crisis.
The UN Secretary-General's remarks came in a video message from the Mount Everest region as part of his visit to Nepal. According to what was stated in the United Nations daily news bulletin, a copy of which we received this morning
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in the daily press conference that the Secretary-General's visit to Nepal is his first trip in preparation for the upcoming climate summit (COP28) that will be held in the United Arab Emirates later this year.
Dujarric added that the Secretary-General met this morning with people from local communities in the Himalayas to hear directly from them about how they are affected by climate change.
The Secretary-General noted in his video message yesterday that Nepal has lost nearly a third of its ice in the past 30 years, adding that the glaciers are retreating, “but we cannot.”
