Eight members of the jury in the 2016 terrorists trial receive support from a psychiatrist. The Ministry of Justice pays the costs of 10 sessions. The system is also open to judges and prison guards. According to the Belgian News Agency, which added, “Jury members often have to hear horrific details in court and have to make difficult decisions, which can lead to stress and mental health problems.” Those affected are entitled to receive 10 free sessions with a psychiatrist. Eleven people received this support, eight of them from the trial of those involved in the Brussels terrorist attacks file and three from other trials.
In 2023, 91 judges and prison guards also accepted the offer of support. For these professionals, the system started earlier and is better known to the target group, a Ministry of Justice spokesman told Belgian-Flemish television broadcaster VRT.
32 people were killed and more than 300 injured in the two terrorist attacks that took place on March 22, 2016 in Brussels. It included the Belgian capital's airport and a domestic train station, and the trial, which lasted for several months, ended in July of this year.
In September, the Brussels Court issued rulings in a file known as the Trial of the Century in Belgium, and three of the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks in Brussels in March 2016 were sentenced to life imprisonment. The court announced in July that six of the ten suspects in the terrorism trial were fully guilty. Two suspects were found partly guilty, and two others were acquitted.
