US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has confirmed her adherence to the US approach to supporting Israel.
Harris said in a statement to Fox News on Wednesday that "America must always protect Israel and support its needs in the field of self-defense, as well as provide American support so that Israel has the resources to confront the attack, especially by Iran and its agents in the region."
She added: "I am firmly committed to that."
For his part, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, stated that the United States supplies Israel with weapons, while at the same time providing it with "political cover." According to what was reported by the Youm7 website in Cairo,
Nebenzia said during a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday that "Washington, without taking into account the opinion of the international community, is continuously supplying its ally in the Middle East with weapons, providing it with political cover, and obstructing any attempts by the UN Security Council to stop the merciless Israeli military machine, which is responsible for the many crimes against the Palestinian people."
Nebenzia pointed out that Israel has the right to ensure its security, but "the path to this goal, without a doubt, lies only through a comprehensive process of settlement in the Middle East and correcting the historical injustice towards Palestine through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly."
This comes against the backdrop of the continued Israeli strikes on Hezbollah sites in Lebanon, and the military operation in the Gaza Strip that has been ongoing since October 7, 2023.
In the same context, US officials expected Israel to respond to the Iranian missile attack, before the US elections scheduled for November 5, according to sources who spoke to CNN.
This timing will push the growing tension in the Middle East to the forefront of the public scene in the few days before the US presidential elections, according to the network.
