Higher levels of trust in others among young people in Europe, especially in Finland and Romania

The average estimated rating of trust in others among people aged 16 and over in the European Union was 5.8 (on a scale from 0 "I do not trust at all" to 10 "I trust completely"). This is in 2023, according to what the European Statistical Office published today, Tuesday.
At the national level, notable differences were observed among the population aged 16 and over, with the rating ranging from 7.3 in Finland to 3.6 in Cyprus.
Among the specific age groups, the highest levels of trust in others were most common among people aged 16 to 29 in the majority of EU countries. This trend was observed in 15 countries, with Romania recording the highest score (7.7). However, in 5 countries, individuals aged 65 and over reported higher trust compared to other age groups, especially in Finland (7.5). Only two countries – Denmark (5.7) and Slovenia (4.7) – recorded the highest trust rates among people aged 30 to 64. In the remaining countries, different age groups recorded the same average rating.
