Brussels: Europe and Arabs
This Wednesday morning, the internal train lines "metro and tram" were disrupted near the Brussels-Midi station due to gunfire, and the authorities issued orders to evacuate the site. Surveillance camera images showed two people firing into the air with an automatic rifle.
The police ordered the closure of certain parts of tram lines 4 and 10 and metro lines 2 and 6 until the perpetrators were searched, the public transport operator STIB confirmed to the Belgian News Agency.
The incident, which occurred in front of the Clemenceau metro station at 06:15 a.m. local time, disrupted the city's traffic, but is not considered a terrorist attack according to STIB.
In this context, police spokeswoman Sarah Fredericks told the Belgian News Agency: "The suspects fled towards the metro station and are probably still in the tunnel between the Clemenceau and Midi stations." "The Brussels Midi police and the Federal Railway Police are searching the area. No one was injured in the shooting”
Local media reported, citing the police in the southern region, that a shooting took place between two people at the Clemenceau metro station in Anderlecht on Wednesday morning at around 6:15 a.m. Surveillance camera footage showed that the attackers used a Kalashnikov rifle and fled to the Clemenceau metro station. “We can clearly see in the images that shots are being fired into the air and not at people,” said Sara Frederiks, a spokeswoman for the southern region police. No injuries were reported. Police are conducting active searches. The Federal Railways Police are also on the scene to track down the perpetrators.
Metro traffic on lines 2 and 6 between Hallebuurt and Oossegem and tram traffic on lines 4 and 10 between Berkendael and Lemonnier were halted, Dutch Railways said. “These are four important lines,” said company spokesman Laurent Vermeersch. “We cannot estimate at this stage how long everything will take.” Vermeersch advises everyone to avoid the affected lines and stations and to look for an alternative route using the buses, trams and metro that are still running. "The underground lines still pass through these places and you can also get anywhere via other metro lines, provided you take an alternative route." It is not yet clear how long the stations will remain closed.
Not for the first time
In recent months, Brussels has been the scene of several shooting incidents. These are often linked to a drug-related environment. This may also be the case in this incident
