Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
The European Union affirmed its commitment to the unity of Sudan, its territorial integrity and the sovereignty of the Sudanese people. In a European statement issued in Brussels regarding the latest developments in the matter, a European spokesman said through the statement, "The parallel "government" plans adopted by the Rapid Support Forces threaten to divide the country and threaten the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people for an inclusive Sudanese process leading to the restoration of civilian rule.
The European Union calls on the parties to the conflict to end the harassment of civil society representatives and refrain from restricting the civil space. The European Union's framework for restrictive measures on Sudan targets individuals or entities that undermine efforts to resume the political transition in the country.
A few days ago, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said that the horrific situation in Sudan is the result of serious and flagrant violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law, and a culture of complete impunity. He warned that the country is on the brink of an unprecedented catastrophe, as famine threatens the lives of thousands.
Türk described the situation in Sudan as "the largest humanitarian disaster in the world," stressing that The international community must act urgently to save millions of lives. “Accountability is a matter of life and death,” he added, and perpetrators of violations must be held accountable. “I cannot overstate the gravity of the situation in Sudan; the desperate plight of the Sudanese people; and the urgency with which we must act to alleviate their suffering. Since the start of the armed conflict in 2023, a devastating human rights crisis has created the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe,” he added.
