Nearly 1,000 companies announced their bankruptcy in Belgium last month

In February 2025, corporate courts recorded 984 bankruptcy. This means an increase of 4.5 % compared to January 2025 (942). According to the Belgian Statistics Agency, in a report on the most important developments in monthly bankruptcy numbers.
The numbers indicated that the number of bankruptcy registered in February 2025 is less compared to the same month in 2024 (-1.0 %), but it is higher than the number of bankruptcy cases in 2023 (+18.8 %).
At the regional level, the number of bankruptcy cases compared to January 2025 in the Flemish region (+4.8 %) and in the capitalist region (+21.0 %) increased in the Brussels region.
Only the last area had more bankruptcy compared to both February 2024 (+43.3 %) and February 2023 (+114.9 %). This is the highest value for February in the Brussels -CAPITAL since 2020 (210).
The number of bankruptcy cases recorded in February 2025 increased in five sectors of activity compared to January 2025. Two of these sectors had more bankruptcy cases compared to February 2024 and February 2023:
The hospitality industry "restaurants and cafes" with 175 bankruptcy, where one must return to 2020 to find a larger number for this month (178);
Transfer and storage with 73 bankruptcy, which means the largest bankruptcy number for a month from February since the previous record was 55 bankruptcy in February 2024.
Two months later in 2025, the number of bankruptcy cases in Belgium is a record in three sectors of the activity:
Transfer and storage with 128 bankruptcy, or 11.3 % higher than the previous record in 2024 (115);
The construction industry where 474 bankruptcy has been pronounced, which means an increase of 6.0 % compared to the previous record in 2024 (447);
Free professions and scientific and technical activities with 157 bankruptcy, or 4.0 % higher than 2024 (151).
The number of jobs lost in February 2025 was the result of bankruptcy 2,844. This means a 1.1 % decrease compared to January 2025 (2,877). However, this means a 17.3 % increase compared to February 2024 and 35.9 % compared to February 2023. One must return to February 2014 to find a greater number of lost jobs in Belgium for this month (3,137).
