The Souq al-Juma and Tajoura municipalities in Libya witnessed celebrations expressing citizens' support for the call of UN envoy Hanna Tetteh to form a unified government and prepare the country for elections within two months.
Residents of the two areas gathered in public squares, chanting slogans supporting the unification of institutions and the acceleration of the electoral process, affirming their commitment to political and economic stability in the country.
These celebrations came after a joint statement issued by Libya's social, political, and youth components, in which representatives of social councils, the youth movement, municipalities, and political parties expressed their appreciation for Hanna Tetteh's briefing and her support for the Libyan people's choice for stability, unification of institutions, moving toward elections, and improving living conditions. According to what was reported by the Cairo-based Youm7 website, citing agencies, the statement emphasized the need to adhere to a period not exceeding two months to form a unified government, warning that any failure would render the government illegitimate. It reiterated the willingness of all components to cooperate with sincere national and international efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people. UN envoy Hanna Tetteh had previously revealed to the Security Council the details of a new roadmap for the Libyan crisis, extending up to 18 months. The plan aims to relaunch the faltering political process in Libya and is based on three main pillars within a timetable ranging from 12 to 18 months.
• Pillar One: Preparing an integrated electoral framework that ensures the organization of free and transparent presidential and legislative elections, while establishing clear legal and constitutional foundations acceptable to all Libyan parties.
• Pillar Two: Unifying state institutions through the formation of a new, unified government that enjoys political legitimacy and is capable of efficiently managing the transitional phase. • The third pillar: launching a structured political dialogue to address the core contentious issues and create a political and security environment conducive to holding elections in a climate of stability.
Tetteh emphasized that the roadmap's success requires broad international support, particularly from the Security Council. She warned that the path will not be easy in light of the existing security and political challenges. However, she emphasized that the Libyan people look forward to this process as a gateway to ending the division and achieving good governance based on a permanent constitution and fair elections that will lead to legitimate and unified institutions.
