Total market production fell by 0.2% in the European Union in June and by 0.4% in the euro area, compared to the previous month.
According to figures released by Eurostat, the European statistical office in Brussels, the Total Market Production Index (TMPI) is a composite indicator that combines four short-term business statistical indicators covering most of the market economy: production in the industry, construction, and services sectors, as well as trade volume.
The decline in total market production in the European Union in June was due to declines in industrial production (-1.0%), construction (-0.5%), and services (-0.1%). However, trade increased (+0.6%).
Compared to the same month last year, total market production rose by 2.2% in the European Union and by 1.9% in the euro area. In another file, according to a statement by the European Statistical Office in Brussels, "The Sustainable Development Goal 'Responsible Consumption and Production' (Goal 12) calls for a comprehensive set of actions by businesses, policymakers, and consumers to adapt to sustainable practices. This goal envisions sustainable production and consumption based on advanced technological capabilities, resource efficiency, and global waste reduction. One of the Eurostat indicators used to measure progress towards Goal 12 is the circular materials use rate, which measures the proportion of materials recovered and recycled into the economy as a percentage of total material use. Between 2008 and 2023, the circular materials use rate in the European Union increased from 9.1% to 11.8%. However, it has remained largely stagnant since 2016. The European Union has set a target of doubling the amount of materials used from collected waste compared to 2020 levels, reaching 22.4% by 2030.
Among EU countries, the Netherlands has the highest circular materials use rate at 30.6%, closely followed by Italy at 30.6%. 20.8%, followed by Malta at 19.8%. The lowest rates were recorded in Romania (1.3%), Ireland (2.3%), and Finland (2.4%).
