Business Bankruptcies in the EU Outpace New Registrations

In the third quarter of 2025, the number of company registrations in the European Union increased by 4.0% compared to the second quarter of 2025.

At the same time, the number of insolvency declarations increased by 4.4% compared to the second quarter of 2025.

This information comes from company registration and insolvency data published by Eurostat, the European statistical office in Brussels.

Continued Rise in Company Registrations
In the third quarter of 2025, the number of company registrations increased in all sectors of the economy compared to the previous quarter. The highest growth was in the information and communication sector (+6.0%), followed by the construction sector (+5.9%), and then the transport sector (+5.5%).

Insolvency Insolvency Increases with Mixed Trends

In the third quarter of 2025, insolvency insolvency increased with mixed trends across sectors. The number of insolvency insolvency in five sectors increased, while three others decreased. The largest increases were recorded in the accommodation and food services (+20.7%), transportation (+18.7%), and financial services (+14.1%) sectors. Meanwhile, decreases in bankruptcies were recorded in the information and communications (-4.8%), construction (-3.1%), and manufacturing (-0.1%) sectors.
