The New York Times reported that NATO leaders are informally discussing the fate of the alliance if Donald Trump wins the US presidential elections.
According to the newspaper, officials, especially the Germans, wondered whether the alliance would continue if Trump withdrew the United States’ membership from NATO, and the country was no longer the focus of the alliance.
The newspaper points out that Germany is afraid, as the world is becoming more complex, and the number of threats is increasing, and the greatest fear is that the United States will stop supporting Ukraine, and the unity of the alliance will become at risk of collapse.
The New York Times also indicates that German officials do not want a direct conflict with Russia in the event of its victory in Ukraine, because they are accustomed to believing that Germany's security is likely to be enhanced through cooperation with Russia, not conflict with it.
