For every gram of excess belly fat, the risk of heart disease increases by 11%. A new study revealed that every extra gram of abdominal circumference increases the risk of heart disease by 11%, and researchers from Oxford University said that every extra gram on the waist raises the risk of heart failure, according to the British newspaper, "Daily Mail". The researchers analyzed data from 430,000 Britons aged 40 to 70 who were tracked on average for 13 years and each extra gram of a healthy waist size was linked to an increased risk of heart disease, such as heart attack, stroke or irregular heartbeat. And the fifth of those with the most belly fat were 3.21 times more likely to suffer from it than the fifth with the least belly fat. But those with the highest body mass index (BMI), which takes into account weight and height, were only 2.65 times more likely to suffer and each additional unit of BMI increased their chances of developing heart failure by 9%. There were 8,669 cases of heart failure for the first time ever during the study, many of which resulted in death. Lead researcher Dr Ayoidobo Ojtado advised measuring yourself annually to monitor risk and the amount of fat people carry around the waist is more important in tracking body obesity and cardiovascular disease risk. He explained, "We know that the fat around the organs in the abdomen is very active and contains a lot of inflammatory factors that can cause cardiovascular disease." Heart failure is a long-term condition when it cannot pump blood throughout the body and causes shortness of breath and other symptoms.
