Avian influenza was diagnosed on a duck farm in Schwenslot in the eastern municipality of Hardenberg. To prevent the spread of the virus, nearly 60,000 ducks were killed by the Dutch Consumer and Food Safety Authority (NVWA), according to reports from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. Local media reported that there are still 36 poultry farms in an area of 10 km around the damaged farm. There is a traffic ban in the area. Seven companies located within a 3-kilometre radius of the duck farm will also be closely monitored by NVWA in the coming weeks.
The ban on transportation applies to all birds, breeding and consumption of eggs and birds in the area. The ban also applies to bird droppings, used litter and other animals and animal products from poultry farms. Hunting of birds is also restricted in the area.
Last Friday, 87,000 chickens were culled in the town of Tgerkgast in the Friesland region. In recent weeks, bird flu has also been diagnosed in 15 places in the north and south of the country
