
Innovation performance in the EU is improving despite challenges

Today, Thursday, the European Commission published the 2022 edition of the European Innovation Scoreboard, which reveals that innovation performance in the European Union has grown by about 10% since 2015.
Compared to 2021, innovation performance improved in 2022 in 19 member states, and decreased in eight.
Compared to the EU average, global competitors such as Australia, Canada, the Republic of Korea and the United States continue to have a performance advantage over the EU. However, the EU has closed the performance gap with these countries and has overtaken Japan since 2021.
Maria Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said: “Europe's commitment to innovation is demonstrated through continuous improvement in innovation performance. In support of Europe's capacity to innovate, Horizon Europe promotes excellence and supports leading researchers and innovators to drive the systemic changes needed to ensure a green, healthy and resilient Europe. The recently adopted new European Innovation Agenda will put Europe at the forefront of the new wave of deep technology innovations and ensure that innovation reaches all regions of Europe, including rural areas.”

The report covers member states of the European Union and many other countries in Europe and around the world. Compared to previous years, this year's edition included three additional countries, namely Albania, Chile and Mexico.
