Young people of immigrant background create terror in Amsterdam

Netherlands: Noureddine El Amrani

For the third day in a row, clashes continued between young people of immigrant origin and the security forces in the Osdorp district of the new western Amsterdam.

The rapid response forces were relied upon to control the situation after the failure of the regular police charged with guarding the neighborhoods. The mayor of the city of Amsterdam, Fimke Halsima, called for the necessity of intervention to protect the property of citizens and investors during the autumn holidays.

The youths used explosives and high-explosive meteors in neighborhoods where there are shops, and about 26 young men, aged between 14 and 26, were arrested after several confrontations between the youths and the Rapid Intervention Forces.

The residents of the aforementioned province expressed their dissatisfaction and concern about the occurrence of such confrontations that occur at night, and they called on the security authorities to intervene to protect their security.

To limit disruptions, an early closing time has been set at 7 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The police, together with neighborhood parents and prevention teams, also tried to prevent young people from kicking trash in groups. That didn't really work on Tuesday night. A group of young men, partly from the neighborhood, started to wreak havoc and threw (heavy) fireworks at the police, and refused to leave. Around 10 pm, the Mobile Rapid Intervention Unit intervened and arrested 26 suspects, aged between 14 and 26 years.
