The Dutch authorities have backed down from allowing refugee families to join their families if they do not have housing.
According to asylum organizations, this decision was taken by the coalition parties in the current government led by the Liberal Party headed by Mark Rutte, to stop what they call the “influx” of refugees, a step intended to reduce the number of new arrivals to the lowlands.
This decision was considered by human rights organizations as contrary to the UN Charter, which calls for the necessity of receiving refugees in difficult situations.
Therefore, the Dutch authorities, through this decision, have worked to stifle family gathering for the new arrivals who requested asylum.
Human rights organizations, as well as institutions defending the rights of immigrants in the Netherlands, believe that the implementation of such a political measure, especially since the country will witness regional elections next March, is a decision through which the ruling coalition parties with a right-wing orientation want to gain more supporters at a time when populism has penetrated Dutch society.
