Brussels - Khartoum: Europe and the Arabs
Due to the "rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres decided Sunday to send an envoy to Sudan immediately.
Martin Griffiths is the head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
According to the Belgian news agency, the Belgian news agency reported Monday morning, the announcement came after it became clear that the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are continuing to fight in the capital, Khartoum, despite the extension of the ceasefire. The fighting that broke out on April 15 came as a result of escalating tensions between Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. According to official figures - which are considered an underestimate - 528 people died and 4,599 people were injured.
"very worried"
"The scale and speed with which events are unfolding in Sudan is unprecedented," Dujarric said in the statement. "We are deeply concerned about the immediate and long-term impact (of this crisis) on all Sudanese and the region as a whole," Guterres said.
“Once again, we call on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and infrastructure, to allow safe passage to flee combat zones, to respect humanitarian workers and their resources, to facilitate relief operations and to protect medical personnel and their facilities and transport,” added Dujarric.
Urgent relief supplies are needed
Griffiths, the UN Emergency Coordinator, said earlier that the humanitarian situation in Sudan had reached a breaking point. “I am on my way to the region to explore how we can provide immediate assistance to the millions of people whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down,” he said. He added that aid stocks were "largely depleted". "We are urgently looking for ways to bring in and distribute additional supplies."
