According to the Belgian media today, Friday, an Iraqi man was arrested in a city in the Flemish region of the country last Wednesday on suspicion of war crimes and terrorist activities. The Iraqi man is over 40 years old and has lived in Belgium since 2015. His house was searched on Wednesday and the man was arrested. He was taken for interrogation by the investigating judge on suspicion of committing several murders with terrorist intent, participating in the activities of a terrorist group, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The investigating judge issued an arrest warrant for him.
More specifically, the man is suspected of being part of a terrorist cell linked to the terrorist group Al Qaeda. He is said to have been responsible for a series of bombings near Baghdad in Iraq in 2009 and 2010. At least 376 people were killed and at least 2,300 injured.
This came in conjunction with an announcement that a terrorist plot had been thwarted in Belgium. On Thursday, raids took place in the north of the country and seven people, most of whom were of Chechen origin, were arrested. They formed a cell of extremists affiliated with ISIS, according to the Public Prosecution Office in Brussels.
