Facebook responds to European Union requests to change the legal basis for using data to display ads and update terms and privacy policy

A statement issued by Facebook distributed to customers Thursday morning said that due to requirements from EU regulators, we are changing the legal basis on which we rely on using certain data to show you ads. Our Terms and Privacy Policy have been updated to reflect this change.
What is changing?
• We now rely on the legal basis called "legitimate interests" to use certain information to serve ads to you.
• This means that you have the right to object to the use of that information to serve ads to you. Learn more about this change and your right to object.
• We've added details to our Terms and Privacy Policy about how ads work in meta products. According to the Facebook statement
 
What stays the same?
• You will still see relevant ads based on your activity, information, and settings.
• You can manage your advertising preferences in Settings.
• You also have choices to exercise your rights in relation to how we use your data.
The updated Terms are effective as of July 5, 2023. By continuing to use our Products after July 5, you accept the Terms updates.
Facebook advised customers to visit the Help Center to review the updated terms and privacy policy, and learn more about ads and what it means to object. "You'll also see what your options are if you don't want to agree to the updated terms," Facebook said.
