The United Nations: More than one program to measure food waste within the framework of achieving the goals of sustainable development

New York - Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
Goal 12 of the Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda seeks to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”. Target 3 of SDG 12 calls for “halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and reducing food losses in production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses, by 2030”. According to what the United Nations published in a tweet on Twitter today, Monday
Currently, FAO and UNEP are measuring progress towards target 3 of SDG 12 through two separate indicators, the Food Loss Index led by FAO and the Food Waste Index led by UNEP.
In May 2015, under the Turkish presidency, the Ministers of Agriculture of the G20 countries highlighted the scale of food loss and waste as a “global problem of enormous economic, environmental and societal dimension” and encouraged all G20 members to strengthen their collaborative efforts to prevent Food loss and waste and their reduction. In the context of policy coherence, the DWG was encouraged to continue its efforts to reach concrete actions within the framework of its implementation plan for the Food Security and Nutrition Framework.
The G20 Recommendation on Food Loss and Waste Reduction was followed by an agreement to establish a Technical Platform for Measuring and Reducing Food Loss and Waste, a joint platform between FAO and the International Food Policy Research Institute. This technical platform, which was launched in December 2015, includes the exchange of information and the holding of in-depth discussions. It builds on and complements existing FAO and CGIAR System Organization Program on Policy, Institutions and Markets and includes an initiative to measure and reduce food loss and waste.
