US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced that Washington has allowed European countries to train Ukrainian military personnel on F-16 fighter jets, which is one of the potential means of supporting Ukraine's efforts to confront Russian air superiority.
"The President (Joe Biden) has given the green light and we will allow, support, facilitate and, in fact, provide the tools for the Ukrainians to start training them on F-16s, as soon as the Europeans are ready," Sullivan told CNN.
In May, Biden told G7 leaders that the United States would support a joint effort with allies and partners to train Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation aircraft, including the F-16. It was not clear when that training would begin.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday that he deplores the notion that the United States has lost its moral authority by supplying cluster bombs to Ukraine.
"Our moral authority did not stem from our being signatories to the Convention Against Cluster Bombs," Sullivan said, referring to a treaty signed by more than 100 countries that prohibits the use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster bombs.
"Our moral authority and responsibility to Ukraine in this conflict stems from the fact that we are supporting a country that is under brutal and vicious attack from its neighbour, with missiles and bombs raining down on its cities, killing its civilians, destroying its schools, churches, and hospitals," he added.
He noted, "The notion that supplying arms to Ukraine in order for them to be able to defend their homeland, and protect civilians, is in some way a challenge to our moral authority that I find questionable."
Sullivan's defense of US President Joe Biden's decision to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs comes after he and his administration faced mounting criticism from some within his own party. Biden described the decision as "difficult", but said he considered it necessary for Ukraine to win the war against Russia.
The Pentagon confirmed last Thursday that the cluster bombs had been delivered to Ukraine.
