The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned of the continued displacement of civilians in Sudan at an alarming rate, in light of the spread of the conflict there to new areas.
More than 4.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes in Sudan.
According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 3.6 million people have been internally displaced, and 169,000 of them have been displaced in the past week alone.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also said that nearly 950,000 refugees, asylum-seekers and returnees have sought safety outside Sudan, especially in Chad, Egypt and South Sudan.
UN Assistant Spokesperson Florencia Soto Niño said at the daily briefing that hunger is on the rise with the escalation of hostilities in Sudania.
She referred to what the World Food Program announced that it had provided aid so far to about 1.8 million people since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan in mid-April. But this figure is only 10 percent of the 20.3 million people suffering from acute hunger.
The program aims to reach approximately 6.7 million people by the end of the year. But access difficulties and instability are hampering relief efforts.
