In a statement, ESCWA said that this ambitious financing initiative seeks to accelerate the implementation of sustainable development goals in all Arab countries and support the achievement of the necessary major transformations in six areas: social protection, energy, education, food systems, digital transformation, and environmental diversity. In this context, the Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Banks, Wissam Fattouh, said that including the sustainable development goals in economic transformation is essential and requires the contributions of all stakeholders in all sectors. He added: "This commitment reflects our determination to support sustainable development in the Arab region and to make it a reality for our societies and countries."
ESCWA says that providing the necessary financing to achieve the sustainable development goals by 2030 remains a major challenge for the Arab region, and it is expected that various parties will benefit from this initiative, including governments, institutions - including micro, small and medium enterprises - and families in the Arab region.
For her part, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rula Dashti praised “this huge commitment that seeks to spark transformation and achieve a lasting impact in the Arab region.” She stressed that the Union of Arab Banks initiative represents “a historic step to create lasting change,” stressing that it is “a win-win step that will move the region toward prosperity and reduce the financing gap to a tremendous extent.”
It is noteworthy that the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development Goals will be held over two days, starting yesterday, Monday, while world leaders meet at the permanent headquarters to discuss the most pressing global issues.
