“September was an absolute record month in terms of temperatures,” the Belgian Meteorological Service reports. The average temperature last month was 18.8 degrees. Usually the figure is 15.2 degrees. The previous record, 18.4 degrees, dates back to 2006. This relates to measurements since 1833. According to what was reported by the Belgian News Agency and published in the Brussels daily newspaper Standard.
The record for the average maximum temperature was also broken: 24 degrees compared to the normal of 19.5 degrees Celsius. The previous record of 23.4 degrees also dates back to 2006.
The average minimum temperature was equivalent to the absolute record of 1999 (measurements since 1982): 14.1 degrees on average, or 2.8 degrees warmer than normal.
Six tropical days
For the first time since observations began in 1892, there was also a heat wave from September 4-11 in the ninth month of the year. There were at least six tropical days (30 degrees or warmer) last month.
In terms of the number of summer days (25 degrees and warmer), the record set in 2006 of nine days was equaled. Furthermore, the first 10 days of the month will go down in history as the warmest first decade of September since observations began.
The warmest September was recorded in 2020 (34.3 degrees) and the warmest September day was also recorded in 1929 (32.8 degrees). The highest temperature measured in the entire country was in Zulzeke (Kluisbergen) where it reached 33.8 degrees on 9 September.
The sun shone for 194 hours and 8 minutes last month. Usually the number is 154 hours and 28 minutes. The number of cloudy days reached a new high of four.
Finally, it was a fairly normal month for rainfall: 64.3 mm (65.3 mm normal) with eight rainy days. Usually there is 14.1.
