European Environment Commissioner visits South America regarding anti-deforestation legislation

Brussels: Agencies
The media platform "Euractiv", which specializes in European affairs, reported that European Environment Commissioner Virginius Sinkevicius began a tour on Friday during which he would visit Paraguay, Bolivia and Ecuador to allay concerns about the implementation of the world's first European Union ban on products related to deforestation. This is a measure that some of the European Union's trading partners described as protectionist, according to what was reported by the Middle East News Agency
The rules, which contribute to the EU's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, will affect its imports of livestock, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soybeans and timber, as well as many derivative products such as chocolate and leather.
Sinkevicius said - in press statements - “With the entry into force of the European Union deforestation regulation at the end of this year, some concerned member states request to discuss the details, so I am responding to this request.”
He added: “Companies seeking to introduce their products to the European market will have to use geolocation data to prove that they do not come from deforested or degraded land after December 2020. These companies face fines of up to 4% of their annual sales across the bloc.” European Union if you break the laws.”
