Increase in corporate bankruptcy: 1,024 bankruptcies in Belgium during the past month

In March 2024, the company courts registered 1,024 bankruptcies. This represents an increase of 3.0% compared to February 2024 (994).
The Belgian statistics office, Statbel, also published an expanded report that includes the most important developments in monthly bankruptcy figures, including that the number of bankruptcies recorded in March 2024 is higher compared to the same month in 2023 (+11.7%) and in 2022 (+11.1%). This is the highest value for March in Belgium since 2015 (1134).
At the regional level, the number of bankruptcies increased compared to February 2024 in the French-speaking Walloon region (+16.2%) and in the Brussels-Capital region (+6.4%). The number of bankruptcies registered in March 2024 increased compared to March 2023 in the Dutch-speaking Flemish region (+8.8%) and in the Walloon region (+25.6%) and compared to March 2022 by 9.0% and 60, respectively, by 0.9%. This is the highest value for March in the Flemish Region since the previous record in 2023 (594 versus 546), while it is enough to go back to March 2015 to find more bankruptcies in the Walloon Region for the month (339 versus 280).
Since the beginning of this year, 1,726 companies in the Flemish region have been declared bankrupt by the company courts. This number is 13.3% higher than the previous record set in 2023 (1,523).
