The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has expressed concern about reports of structural discrimination and inequality faced by foreigners in Qatar. It also welcomed the reforms undertaken by Qatar to enhance the protection of migrant workers.
This came within the results published by the United Nations Committee yesterday, Monday, regarding Qatar, Albania, Mexico, Moldova, and San Marino, which included the main concerns and recommendations of the Committee regarding the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in addition to the positive aspects.
According to the UN daily news bulletin, the committee said that while it noted Qatar's various national development strategies, it expressed concern about reports of structural discrimination and inequality faced by non-citizens, particularly those from South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
The committee asked Qatar to prioritize appropriate measures to combat structural discrimination and inequality against foreigners.
It also recommended combating racial profiling and addressing the disparate impact of housing regulations, mandatory HIV testing, and educational fees on noncitizens, especially low-income migrant workers.

The Committee welcomed the reforms undertaken by Qatar to enhance the protection of migrant workers, including domestic workers.
However, it expressed concern that some legal provisions and social attitudes allowed the kafala system to continue in practice, and that migrant domestic workers, the majority of whom were women, continued to face abusive working conditions and intersecting forms of discrimination, including physical, verbal or sexual violence by employers. work or their families.
The committee urged Qatar to ensure the full implementation of all measures that protect migrant workers, including prohibiting the confiscation of identity documents and passports by employers, and abolishing the requirement to obtain an exit permit from the employer to leave the country in all cases.
